This Avenel House is situated on an expansive property overlooking vineyards in Australia’s South-Eastern state of Victoria. Designed by Australian studio Paul Morgan Architects, The design of this four-bedroom house is inspired by the dynamic landscape elements of this exposed rural setting. Simultaneously nestled into the granite hillside and cantilevering out from the sloping ground, the house has a contrasting sense of mass and lightness.
Avenel House is self-sustaining in a remote and harsh environment without existing services. The house was sited high enough to maximize the view from the house but low enough so that the view of the brow of the hill and the silhouette of trees was not disturbed.
The plan bends along the contours of the hillside into a chevron which embraces the view. Bedrooms and the living room are strung along the contours, connected by a long corridor. The master bedroon is at one end of the house and other bedrooms and bunkroom at the other.
Paul Morgan Architects is a design-led practice that takes a strategic and expressive approach to create innovative projects for ambitious clients. The practice works strategically with the client from inception to align project outcomes with the clients vision whilst amplifying the brief’s spatial and expressive potential. Paul is personally involved in each project from initiation to completion.
