New home for the Dutch ambassador located in Beijing, China designed by Kraaijvanger Urbis. The residence is situated on a large site in the embassy district allowed for a single-storey building with direct access to each function without jeopardising the privacy of the living quarters. The building has two wings: one contains the meeting rooms and service area, the other houses the private quarters. Each wing has its own orientation towards the garden.
The most expressive part of the design is the long wall of granite with Mongolian above the roof overhang. The facades on the south and west are transparent and provide views of the garden as a ‘dry river’ is designed. A winter garden between the two wings offers fresh green in the harsh climate of Beijing.
The official part of the building features a large entrance offering direct views through the building into the garden, without revealing the rest of the house. The expression of the house is dominated by an elongated wall that stretches beyond the building itself. This wall, made of Mongolian granite, shields the interior, that in turn opens up towards the garden. The horizontal orientation enhances the sense of space and contrasts with the verticality of the trees.
